Museums tend to be stuffy and dusty places to visit at the best of times. So why not get yourselves out in the sunshine and visit some of these amazing open air museums. I mean even if you do get a downpour or two there are always interesting places to pop into while the rain pelts down. I used to love visiting places like these when I was little especially, if it meant a day trip out with the school grounds!

With more and more of these places popping up every year, it’s no wonder that they try and out do each other to attract more paying customers (although a lot of these places just cover the running costs with entrance fees). Some resort to hiring more costumed characters to interact with you on your visit, while others stick to offering tram rides or trips down the mines to pull in the crowds (well mostly the kiddies really). So if you are in need of transport to get you to these fantastic places, search for car hire Europe and that should help you find what you are looking for. Just don’t be tempted to ask for car hire while visiting these places as they are likely to give you a horse and cart.

So here’s some fab open air museums for you to visit…

King Oscar II’s Open Air Museum, near Oslo 1888
Source

The King only managed to build 5 of the 8 or 10 planned buildings here as he lost interest due to the expenses involved in building these huge and complicated wooden structures. This is now part of the Norsk Folke museum that was built on the adjoining property in Oslo.

Beamish Museum, North East England

Source

Beamish open air museum is one of the places you always go to on school trips as a child.
Complete with a mine, old fashioned shops and bars plus houses laid out in different eras to show you what this old town would have looked like many years ago. It’s a fab place to visit, so why not take a trip on the tram or don a hard hat and see what it was like working down the local mines!

Beamish Museum

The Old Town, Aarhus, Denmark

Source

This is an open air museum which is constructed of 75 historical buildings collected from all over Denmark and then rebuilt on this site. The main attractions there are the Blacksmith, workshops, old style kitchens and the 5 beautiful historical gardens. The buildings themselves cover a wide variety of architecture and construction methods, dating from around the 1550’s to the late 19th Century. All this and you can even have a ride in a horse and carriage too!

The Old Town

Black Country Living Museum, Dudley, England

Source

This looks a lovely place to visit, with loads of traditional red brick built shops such as the Chemist’s and local Sweet Shop. There are numerous ways of getting around this massive Museum, you could walk or take the old style double decker buses, trams, old motorbikes (just to look at!) and horse rides. There are plenty of things to keep you amused on this 26 acre site. The costumed characters will do everything to make you take a trip back in time.

Black Country Living Museum

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, USA

Source

Most of the missing Colonial buildings were rebuilt to resemble to 18th Century ones that would have once stood there. This would have taken place sometime in the 1930’s. Nowadays most of the buildings here are open to the public, except a few reserved for employees. This living Museum tells the story of the local area and the Colonists that settled there, before the American Revolution.

Colonial Williamsburg

Nihon Minka-en, Kawasaki, Japan

Set in this beautiful Japanese wooded area, this is a collection of traditionally crafted farm houses. Some of which have received the designation of Important Cultural Assets from the National Government. This looks like something straight out of a Samurai movie, I would love to have a look around there!

Detmold Open Air Museum, Germany

Source

The open air museum at Dermold is a collection of over a 100 Historical rural buildings, such as schools, farmhouses and windmills. All of which have been transported from other parts of the state and rebuilt there. There is everything from horse drawn carriage rides, walking tours, to craft demonstrations and over 200 acres to explore.

Connemara Heritage Centre, County Galway, Ireland

Source

Although this only opened back in the 1980’s, the buildings go back much further in history. The main attractions at the site are the reconstructions of a Crannog ( Ring Fort) and a Clochaun (behive shaped Bronze Age building). There is also Dan O’Hara Homestead to visit, which by the look of it has never changed over the years, probably since it was built! The Centre also include audiovisual tours and history presentations. All set in beautiful emerald green countryside.

Connemara Heritage Centre

So get yourselves out in the fresh air and discover a little bit of history, either on your doorstep or when your of on your holidays. Until next time..

Being made redundant at any age is a shock and it can have big self esteem implications. With a shrinking employment market and a recession that continues to make its effects felt, finding new work in your chosen field is an ongoing struggle. So much so that prospective job hunters need to come up with ever more inspirational ways of making themselves the most desirable employee a business can have. Advertise a job – the traditional way of a company looking for staff and the job hunter replies to the ad is no longer a good enough technique.

Source

One step is to upload your CV onto a recruitment website. This can help tailor your job search and also allows potential employers to find you through a CV search. You certainly need to stand out, promote yourself and come up with awe-inspiring ways to hook an employer. This was what passed through Andy Palmer’s mind when he was made redundant by Northern Rock in 2009. As a mortgage advisor for a failing building society in a time when the banking industry was laying off staff in order to keep afloat, Andy was faced with a career cul-de-sac. After 30 unsuccessful attempts to find new work the ‘old fashioned way’ he posted himself on eBay under the title ‘Employee for a Month’.

Source

In his description he offered his services for a 35 hour week with a starting bid of £1000, 25% of which would go to his chosen charity, the NSPCC. Putting himself forward as a flexible worker he told BBC Radio Kent that he ‘would work in any industry providing that it had nothing to do with sex or illegal activities’.

Source

Surrounded by publicity and interest, Andy was taken on as a consultant by Simon Coulson who paid £1500 for his services. And in November of 2009, he kept his part of the agreement, paying the NSPCC a useful £375.

Source

Read Andy’s blog article

It was certainly a novel way to get noticed and bidding on employees is still very much an unusual method in finding a workforce. Today, it is much more of a senior management prerogative and referred to as ‘poaching’ where a company – particularly in the financial sector – will approach existing employees of a rival company to try and get them to ‘defect’.

Source

Considering today’s economic climate and the Bank of England’s statement that inflation will reach 5% by the end of this year and that any new jobs will have to be in the private sector (funding for public or third sector work being negligible); it seems almost certain that more people will take Andy Palmer’s method, move it up a notch and promote themselves in ever more inventive ways.

Greg Coltman left the rat race in 2005 to work as a freelance writer but loves to read about ingenious job hunting techniques.

At first glance, the title ‘Churches in Trains’ may seem a little incongruous. After all, aside from the main, engine and passenger carriages the only other one we are used to is the buffet carriage. Nevertheless, if you were to rewind to the 1800s in Russia you would have found that their trans-Siberian trains regularly incorporated a church carriage to help spread the Word to the thinly populated masses of the country. Not only did you get to your destination but your train tickets gave you a spiritual connection as well as the railway variety.

Today, thanks to the fall of Communism and the renewed freedom of Orthodox Catholic worship the church cars are on the move once more. Well, perhaps some of them are. Quite a few of the old carriages have been incorporated into streets’ architecture and act as the local church, often with the addition of a few extra outbuildings to serve other needs; dining halls and so on. I would just hope that a drunken tourist wouldn’t wander in with his train timetable and end up joining in Mass instead of joining fellow travellers to the airport.

Here is my pick of some of the most fascinating examples of stationary churches in trains.
In this first one I particularly like the typical Russian architectural influence of the bulbous domed steeple.

Source

And that same church again from a different aspect.

Source

The interior of the carriages is larger than you may expect.

Source

The carriages are often found in prominent positions, a reminder of how much religion plays a part in the residents’ lives. This image of this church serves two purposes; one is to illustrate they can be part of a new housing development and secondly, that Russia is not the cold, inhospitable place that we, in the West, typically assume. It has air conditioning.

Source

Just because they are train carriages adrift from the engine it doesn’t mean they are without power. This one has a simple cable connection to the mains.

Source

The self-same church surrounded by its parishioners.

Source

This location has benefited from having the site enclosed by a solid timber wall created in the same style as the church.

Source

And finally…

This is a redevelopment area where a church train has been installed on a brick plinth. The ground around is being levelled prior to resurfacing and, in the background, new homes are being constructed with only a few needing their roofs installed.

Source

Guest blogger, Greg Coltman, has done a bit of travelling in his time but is the first to admit he would prefer spending time in the buffet car. Now are there any of those on plinths around here?

If you’re anything like me you’ll be astounded at the range and availability of different financial products there on the market. From bank accounts, building society accounts, stocks, shares, bonds and property there’s so much to choose from and so many pros and cons to each one. As if that’s not complicated enough you also have to consider if you want to tie your money up with a company; it’ll increase your rate of return but you’ll not have access to your money for 5 years or more. It’s enough to make you just want to spend your savings on a holiday for the kids and get some Disneyland Paris tickets.

But while you and the kids are enjoying yourselves will you get the familiar guilt of wondering whether you should be saving for the long term? When your good lady is shopping in Paris you’ll be thinking of the bills and the lack of cash to pay them with. You might idly wonder whether Disney is a good company to invest in.

Source

On the plus side it is the largest entertainment company in the world, it’s in the Fortune 500, it has a proven record high profits and it has a diversified portfolio that shields it against occasional brand failures. Their purchase of Marvel with its impending new Spiderman film series will guarantee positive stock movement in the near future. The main caveat against Disney is that its success is cyclical. With the end of Hannah Montana there will inevitable be a slight downturn though once a replacement series has been developed the stock will rise again.

A more recent shot in the arm was on 8th April with the announcement that Disney is investing $4.4 billion in a new resort in Shanghai, China. This will be their second amusement park in the most populated country on the planet.

But this is an article about the worst places to invest your money, a brief collection of companies to avoid if you want to improve your assets and get a good return on your money.

Stocks and Shares

Argos

It’s been a bad year for Argos-to-Homebase owner Home Retail, 40% down at 193.6p. It was removed from the Footsie following consecutive quarters of poor trading: sales down 5.1% in the second quarter after an 8.1% fall in the first quarter.

Orexigen Therapeutics Inc

This health care pharmaceuticals company is currently the worst performer in the United States’ Russell 3000: 68.43% down, probably due to the disastrous news in February that the FDA wouldn’t licence the Contrave diet drug.

Source

Akamai Technologies

The internet speed and reliability service has been down 22% on the S&P 500 since December 2010.

Source

Property

If property is more your cup of tea then you need to be careful where you invest. According to the Forbes magazine, California is starting to look promising but Florida is definitely somewhere to avoid. Check out this best and worst cities link for more information.

European New Builds

You need to take special care if you intend to buy new build Spanish property. It is estimated that there are 100,000 houses in Spain which are not legal constructions and so far at least 20,000 of these properties have destruction orders on them. New property here can be an investment but only if you ally yourself with a good legal representative who knows his property law backwards.

Source

And finally…

Should I invest in the company I work for?

Absolutely NOT. I have encountered a number of employers who have encouraged their staff to invest in the company shares only for the company to go bust taking the employees jobs and savings with it.

Guest blogger, Greg Coltman, is not a financial expert but keeps his head aloft the murky fiscal waters with an ironed copy of FT and buoyancy aids in his briefcase.

While travelling on the Dover to Calais ferry to France for our long weekend in magnificent Paris my hubby was reading all about old cars and the races they took part in in the early 1900s to brush up on his cultural knowledge. So I had a quick peek and soon realised how dangerous these cars and races were back then. It makes you more relieved than ever that we had remembered to get some European car insurance just in case anything awful happened while we were away especially with our little girl onboard. The last thing we would want is to be broken down and stuck in a place we werent familiar with. But were lucky, I am sure those olden day races werent insured. They were so dangerous who would have wanted to insure them? They were just lucky to go across the finish line still alive I bet!

Some of these races were so dangerous, that not all the drivers made it back, never mind over the finishing line. So here are some Terrifying Historical Car Races…

Fernand Gabriel driving a Mors in the Paris – Madrid Race in 1903

Source

Marcel Renault had it is first fatality in the Paris to Madrid Race in 1903 but it didnt stop there. After a total of 9 fatalities, French Authorities stopped the race in Bordeaux and proceeded to ban open road racing in France.

Starting Line up at the New York to Paris Race in 1908

Source

This was known for being the longest and most gruelling Motor race in History! Out of the 6 teams (France, Italy, Germany and the US) beginning the New York to Paris race in 1908, only 3 teams made it to the finish line. The torturous route started at NYC and proceeded on to Albany, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Valdez Alaska, Japan, Vladivostok, Omsk, Moscow, St.Petersburg, Berlin and Finally the race ended in Paris. The Worst Part of the Journey would be travelling across the Bering Straits in the dead of Winter! An American Thomas Flyer, driven by George Schuster won the epic 22,000 mile race in 169 days.

Gaston Chevrolet at the Beverly Hills Speedway 1920

Source

This was a 500 lap, 1 mile long board race track which was notoriously treacherous even in the best of conditions. Drivers could reach speeds of anything up to nearly 90mph on this track. Gaston Chevrolet (younger brother of the co founder of the chevrolet motor car company) was killed aged just 28 at this Los Angeles race track in 1920. The accident also claimed the lives of fellow Racer Eddie O Donnell and his Mechanic Lyall Jolls and also seriously injured Chevrolet’s Mechanic John Brenahan. But Gaston Chevrolet never got to know that he had won the National Race-Car-Driving Championship.

Targa Florio 1906

Source

Named after the founder Vincenza Florio the Targa Florio Race took place in the beautiful but dangerous Sicilian Mountains. The race consisted of 3 laps, totalling 277 miles. This was a terrifying death defying, high altitude race. Full of winding roads with sheer drops and nothing to stop you falling off them. Not only was the landscape dangerous and hard to navigate but the locals were also shooting at the racers and trying to protect their fields and animals. If you happen to break down on this race it might not be just the cold that would get you but also the wolves that prowl these mountains!!

The Carrera Panamericana 1950-55

Source

The Carrera Panamericana is a race on the 2,100 mile stretch of road in Mexico which began in 1950 when the road was completed. The race lasted for 5 days and covered the whole stretch of road. There was absolutely no planning and any type of car was allowed to compete and any one was allowed to enter. The crazy thing is that you did not need to be a Racing Driver. It was so dangerous, especially when you mix Racing Drivers with loads of experienced and total novices. Lots of accidents ensued.

Even Taxis Drivers got in on the act, they took part and collected passengers and fares on route.
There were no rules to speak of but if anyone stopped to help other competitors, i.e. if they had crashed or broken down, they were disqualified. In the 4 years that the race took place, 27 competitors died. It was then banned in 1955 after a horrific accident at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, where 83 spectators were killed.

Source

The Mille Miglia was a 1,000 mile endurance race that took place 24 times in 30 years from 1927 until it was banned in 1957. A crash that same year killed Spanish (Ferrari) Driver Alfonso de Portago, his Co-Driver Edmund Nelson and 9 spectators, 5 of whom who were children. A blown tyre was suspected to have caused the crash. Later that same race a second crash took the life of Joseph Gottgens who was driving a Triumph TR3. These 2 fatal accidents resulted in the race being totally banned for many years.

Parties come in all different shapes and sizes, just like people really. But some can be more crazy than your average party at home.

Take all these big Music Events like Pop in the Park and the V Festival, these are all just big Music parties really with lots of fantastic music, dancing and huge amounts of booze! Although, they are rarely set in weird places but they can be insane for the pure fact they can go on for days or in some cases weeks!

Company Sponsors of some of the events will have little parties arranged for music reviews but these are mainly for the staff and not for the public. Together they thrash out who deserves to have the great music reviews on their website. Anyway , I thought I would give you a little taster of these crazy parties that some people have and the totally insane places they get held at.

So here are some insane party locations;

Limo Party

Source

How about this for the Barbie Girls. The Barbie stretch limo is available for parties and can be seen cruising around town! Bright pink, neon lights, hot tunes and booze. What more does a barbie girl want? If these sounds like your kinda party then check out insane limos to start planning your Barbie princess celebrations.

Underground/Subway Car Party

Source

A subway party normally takes place aboard trains or on the underground cars on mass transit systems. These parties include singing, dancing, playing music and sometimes gift exchanging.
They are normally organised through Social Media Sites such as Facebook or Twitter

Catacomb Party

Source

These parties in the Paris catacombs are organised very quietly as they are illegal. There are a few reasons why these parties have to held so secretively and one is that they are very dangerous health and safety wise (small tunnels, falling rocks and lots of party goers, not a good mix!) Also, emergency services access isnt great (if there is an accident) as the tunnels arent exactly made for this many people! And finally, the ancient relics in the catacombs normally get damaged at these raves.

The Prim Compound, Vegas

Source

A cave party? Yes, Ive got one in my basement that we can dance the night away in! This Vegas Mansion is on the market for a whopping $16.5 million! That is an insane amount of money but for all you people rolling in the green stuff, this is an awesome 10 bed home made specifically for partying!

Graveyard Party

Source

These parties are not for the faint hearted or for those of you who like to stay squeaky clean in more ways than one. They are illegal and not to mention you are dancing about on peoples graves which lets be frank is quite disrespectful! But they do take place in the UK and all over in America.

Barn Parties

Source

Fort Worth, Dallas, Texas. For all you cow folk out there, this is the perfect place for your party. Cowboy boots and Line Dancing galore! They cater for every type of party or special occasion.

Pole Dancing Party

Source

These pole dancing parties are insane because they are normally held for Hen Parties. They are quite embarrassing and possibly even quite dangerous. Just think of how many pole related injuries there are each year. Plus the girls hosting these parties, are extremely bendy and just how do they do some of that stuff?

Paint Balling Party

This is masses of fun and I love paint balling but sometimes it can sting a bit! It’s like being at war without actually being in danger and it tends to brings out the soldier in you. But beware, look at the paint ball injuries or bruises on Google. You have been warned.

Franklin Castle, Cleveland, Ohio. Named the most haunted house in Ohio, this would be an insane venue for a Halloween Party. Illegal revellers break in to party in Franklin Castle at times, but most do not stay long.

Most of these Desert Parties take place in Nevada, just outside of Las Vegas, hence all the fancy lights. They also have to take place in the evening, as it would be too hot during the day, especially while dancing. This looks so gorgeous, like Arabian Nights!!

There really are some cool places for Parties out there, so go find them!

As a kid growing up I would have loved to have piloted the Millennium Falcon. And as an adult sci-fi fan, not a day goes by when I dont mentally deliberate the pros and cons of my favourite fictional spaceships. Some guys take it further and pimp their cars to resemble their favourite vehicles. Star Wars fans in particular have a wide range of vessels and also styles that they can mimic. Whether its decals, paintwork or a fully fledged custom build then sci-fi fans are the people to wow the automotive world. Now, Id jump at the chance to own an electric car but would have to give great thought into pimping it out. I’d need at least a couple of laser ports and a bespoke paint job.

There are few interests that inspire such passion. Aside from sport, it is sci-fi that attracts such a devoted audience that an amazing minority go on to produce some remarkable feats of engineering and artwork. Fancy an X-Wing inspired car, a Jawa Sandcrawler or Darth Vader on your bonnet? Well, youve got it!

Shawn Crosby first started applying his Star Wars designs to motorbikes but then, in 2000 he moved on to his first full-size car. This car he dubbed the H-Wing. As any good Rebel supporter knows you need a good Astromech droid on board and Shawn has even provided a full size Artoo unit!

The custom paint job is a staple of the pimping world.
As a genre, sci-fi is a mint for publishers and film makers. There are so many fabulous sci-fi movies and ways to see them – in the cinema, online with Virgin or in the air with Virgin America – that it is hard to know where to start. Their popularity with geeks has never waned, but the mainstream audience appeal has surged ever since Jane Fonda in ‘Barbarella’ and Sigourney Weaver in ‘Aliens’ which made sci-fi sexy

Source

Sex sells. There is nothing new there. Canny film makers and their marketers have encouraged costume designers to go for tight fitting, body hugging outfits or cut them down to as little as possible for both the male and female actors. You don’t meet too many dowdy people in space.

Source

And the marketing penchant for the sci-fi zeitgeist spills over into advertising as well. Despite science fiction being explicitly futuristic, many of the photo shoots have a retro flavour to them, often harking back to the vision and designs of the future from 30 to 50 years ago. Given the state of budget cuts in NASA and other space programs, sadly we don’t see many signs of space-age looks being needed in the too near future.

Sometimes there is just a shoot for fun. Photographer Robin Cook must have had a ball (and access to some fab costumes) doing a shoot commemorating arguably the greatest trilogy of them all.

More Robin Cook photography with a slightly ill-fitting storm trooper costume. If that is the dark side, any wonder Darth Vader turned.

Ever since the occurrence of colorectal cancer in the United States made a serious impression, more and more people talk about colon cleansing. The idea is simple enough to understand and the process goes around the thought of intentionally ridding the colon of elements that are hypothesized to be harmful. However, even if the idea is straightforward, debates between believers and skeptics are never ending. People, experts and common alike, have different views regarding the effectiveness of colon cleansing, the validity of it benefits, and even whether or not it is necessary to do it. Nevertheless, perhaps due to the advent of marketing media, there has been a steady rise of people who go in to medical establishments for colon cleansing procedures.

People who believe in the benefits of colon cleanse usually argue that there is nothing wrong with being clean. In fact, colon cleansing does not necessarily mean a trip to a hospital. There are lots of natural methods to cleanse one’s large intestines. Food high in fiber and those with laxative properties are common ways to eliminate toxins. Colonic irrigation or hydrotherapy that makes use of instruments inserted in the rectum is also a way of excreting such bad elements.

Those who shake their heads in the idea of colon cleansing argue that the body ahs its natural way of eliminating toxins and solid wastes without the help of unnatural methods. According to some, colon cleansing procedures can even disrupt the balance inside our body. Cases of dehydration, laxative-dependent defecation, and internal abrasions are possible especially if the procedure is done improperly.

At the end of the day, whether you’re in to colon cleansing or not, the important thing to remember is to avoid things that are proven to be harmful to your colon. A healthy lifestyle is still the best preventive measure against colon problems.

Can you imagine a day without electricity for 16 hours ? Its time for us now to face it. In my country Nepal, which is second largest source of water in world, the schedule of 16 hours load-shedding is going to be published. However currently there is 8 hours daily load shedding.

How to work online ?

I have a inverter and it works around 4 hours after being fully charged for a single PC. However, when there is long load shedding it won’t be charged fully and i won’t be able to use it more. Also, the ISP won’t have backup and will be switched off. It is really hard working here these days. Now only way would be to purchase laptop and good inverter which would easily be able to supply electricity 24 hrs for laptop. The problem will still remain because of the ISP. I am searching for alternative ISP here which will give 24 hrs internet connection.

What about people in office who work in computer ?

Really good time for officers who work in government offices. Private offices manage back up with generator also but government won’t do it. Officers spend most of the time leisurely by gossiping.

Students are much happy here.

No need to study, no need to do homework and no punishment in the school. At home parents won’t shout because there will be no electricity and teachers also understand the problem in school. However, students have to work hard in school time.

When will the problem be solved god ! Damm it ..
